But, where are you really from
My three siblings and I are Mixed Race and have grown up in London. My older brother went to university outside London and was often asked by other students when he said he was from London
“But, where are you really from?”
I decided to use this experience, which is the experience of many Black, Brown and Mixed Race heritage people in the UK, in my work, and to combine it with my own heritage and identity as a mixed race person.
Throughout this work, I have looked into my family history, heritage, DNA and identity to combine that into various textiles, photographs and weavings with influences of creative computing. My research began looking at old photos of my family and thinking about what it would be like if they met each other from both sides of my family. This then made me think about how culture, identity, and personal history can influence who we become.
